Vulcan delivers drinking water systems in Bairro 1º de Maio in Moatize, reinforcing its commitment to the well-being of local communities

On 20 September, Vulcan reaffirmed its commitment to the development and well-being of the communities around its operations with the delivery of two new drinking water supply systems in Bairro 1º de Maio, in Moatize. The initiative will directly benefit more than 10,000 inhabitants of the region.

The system, built from scratch, includes two artisanal boreholes and a set of solar panels that power submerged pumps, enabling a continuous supply of drinking water. The water will be distributed through three standpipes connected to four large tanks installed on a 5 metre high tower. Vulcan also symbolically delivered six hand pumps to the Chithatha, Nhantchere and 1º de Maio neighbourhoods, thus expanding access to drinking water in more remote areas.

At the handover ceremony, the Moatize District Administrator, Eugénio Muchanga, expressed his gratitude to Vulcan and encouraged the population to make good use of the new systems. ‘This is a gesture of great value for our community. It’s up to all of us to look after and preserve these resources,’ Muchanga emphasised.

Anoop Kumar, representing Vulcan, emphasised the importance of this initiative, describing it as ‘necessary’. We are committed to ensuring that the communities close to our operations have access to better living conditions. That’s why we’re happy with initiatives like these’

This action is part of a series of initiatives resulting from the memorandum of understanding signed between Vulcan, FIPAG and the district government, which aims to expand and improve the water supply system in Moatize. The collaboration has already resulted in the drilling of new boreholes, the installation of pumps and the improvement of pipework in various areas.

In addition to these initiatives, Vulcan has guaranteed the daily supply of drinking water, via tanker trucks, to the neighbourhoods of Nhanchere, Bagamoio and 1º de Maio, as well as to the communities of Ntchenga and M’phandue, benefiting around 50,000 inhabitants of Moatize.
