Community recycling initiative supported by Vulcan generates income for young people in Moatize
As part of its social responsibility actions, Vulcan implemented a community initiative for recycling discarded materials within its operations, where more than 20 young artisans from Moatize trained by Vulcan work.
The initiative has been ongoing since 2022, and is dedicated to the production of various valuable items for local communities, through the reuse and recycling of waste such as: wood, tires, air filters, metal scrap, conveyor belts, among others.
To talk a little about this project, we spoke to the workshop manager, Isaque Momade, who told us how it all started.
“We started with the rehabilitation of school desks, production of chairs based on tires and pallet benches, today we have diversified our work and we have a great challenge of producing beds, chairs, tables and other furniture for Vulcan accommodations and for the communities which will make us gain not only in terms of income, but also the experience and professional development of those involved”, said Momade.
For his part, Amós Caliate, Social Development Analyst at Vulcan, explained that this initiative arises as part of the participatory mapping of opportunities carried out in communities, led by Vulcan, government and civil society organizations.
“One of the mechanisms for us to include communities is through their integration into the value chain of the Moatize Coal Mine, and this time, we support them to get out of unemployment”, concluded Caliate.
This initiative aims to give opportunities to more members of the community, particularly young people from Moatize.
